Explanation of the Additional Pay Period

Print this page

The additional period, either period 27 or 53 according to your pay frequency, can be used for the first period in the new year. See the table below for details.

For example, you can use period 53 for a week beginning on a Sunday and ending on Saturday for which the pay is issued the following Thursday.

PERIOD DATES

Period 53 of 2008

From Dec. 21 to 27, 2008,
issued December 31, 2008

Period 01 of 2009

From Dec. 21 to 27, 2008,
issued January 1, 2009

Period 02 of 2009

From Dec. 28, 2008 to Jan. 3, 2009,
issued Jan. 8, 2009

  • For the additional period, 53 of 2008, the dates are the same as those for period 01 of 2009. Thus, only the payment issue date is different. As long as you have not performed the Year-end Procedure in Payroll, you cannot issue pays for the next year.

  • Remember that if you use the additional period for the current year, the next year will simply begin with period 02.
WARNING
Employers in Québec – Commission des normes du travail

Note that if you issue your first pay for 2009 on January 1st, you must use the additional period from 2008. Québec labour standards require that when a regular payday falls on a paid holiday, the pay must be issued the preceding workday. Therefore, in this situation, the pay must be issued on December 31, 2008 using the additional period from 2008.
